Day & Night gold earrings with pearls, 19th century, Italy
Description
In the first half of the 19th century, jewellery was produced in Sicilian and Southern Italian goldsmith workshops that delighted not only with its intricacy but also with its extraordinary lightness of form. These Day & Night earrings, with the option of detaching the lower, more elaborate part, are an excellent example of this tradition.
Their composition resembles paper cut-outs and lace motifs so characteristic of the region. The warm-toned gold has been cut, hammered, and profiled into openwork leaves, stems, and rosettes, which are arranged like a fragment of embroidery transferred into metal. Between them are small river pearls, natural, irregular, with a subtle luster, like dew drops caught on floral ornaments.
The clasp, characteristic of Italian products of the era, also suggests Sicilian or Southern Italian origin. The entire piece measures 7 cm, giving the earrings their theatrical moment in the "Night" version, and when the lower part is detached, they become a light adornment suitable for day wear.
This is jewellery that has retained the aesthetic of folk culture, filtered through the craftsmanship of local goldsmiths, intricate, rhythmic, and full of small details that are gradually discovered over time.
